If you’re looking for the cheapest way to dive the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns, we’ve broken down the real costs of day trips that include 1, 2 or 3 certified dives. In saying that, everyone has different priorities. Some people want to do as much diving as possible; others are travelling with family or non-diving mates. This guide helps you compare the real prices side by side and please note, cheapest doesn’t always mean best. Some trips include better gear, longer reef time, or fewer people onboard. Others visit better dive sites or include guided dives. We’ve created this page to help certified divers find the right balance between price, value and experience. We’ve created 4 tables:
• The first shows the base price of each trip and the cost of each additional dive.
• The next three show what you’ll pay if you do 1, 2 or 3 dives.
We’ve sorted them by base price, which is how most people plan their trips, starting with what fits the budget.
We’re all certified divers and we know how quickly these trips add up. As a family of three, it gets expensive. In our job providing advice and booking reef tours every day, people ask us for this info all the time. We figure, if it’s helpful for us, there’s a good chance it will help you too.
We dive regulary on the Great Barrier Reef. As a family, it's our favourite thing to do.
This table shows the base rate for each day trip and how much you’ll pay to add 1, 2 or 3 dives. Only 1 operator includes a dive in the base fare (Reef Experience). Others offer cheaper per-dive rates, the more you do. A dash means that number of dives is not available on that tour. Please note: We’ve included Port Douglas dive tours in here too, just to give you the ‘big picture’ on all the scuba diving tours in our area. Port Douglas is a 1 hour drive north of Cairns.

Our Recommendation - Silverswift – Quicksilver - For 3 dives Silverswift offers the best value. The total cost is AUD $463, which includes the base fare and dive upgrades, working out to AUD $154 per dive. The trip includes dive guides, all gear, a hot and cold buffet lunch and visits 3 outer reef sites that are excellent for divers, including Milln and Flynn.
Don't forget your Camera or GoPro and when you see these guys, stop and get the shot. We took this photo on an Ocean Freedom day tour.
Twelve operators offer the option to do 1 certified dive as part of a day trip. The below table shows the total cost, which includes the base fare and 1 dive. It is sorted from lowest to highest to make it easy to compare. One dive days suit certified divers travelling with non-diving friends or family who want to share the day and still get in the water. It’s also a really great option for parents with uncertified children; you can take turns diving and child minding. Please note: None of the boats offer a child minding service. One dive days are also suitable for those wanting to log a dive without committing to a full day underwater. Just keep in mind, with only 1 dive, you’ll see less of the reef. If you’re choosing this mainly to save money, you may miss what makes the reef truly special.

Our Recommendation - Reef Experience - For a 1 dive Great Barrier Reef tour from Cairns, Reef Experience offers the best value. The total cost is AUD $260, with 1 dive included in the fare. The trip also includes snorkelling gear, a certified dive, a hot and cold buffet lunch, morning and afternoon tea. They visit 2 outer reef locations and give you about 5.5 hours at the reef.
Your kids can dive with you if they are certified, Ethan has been diving since he was 10.
Only 8 operators offer 2 certified dives on a reef day tour. The table below adds the base fare and the cost of 2 dives, sorted from lowest to highest. Two dives are enough for most certified divers, especially if you dive regularly or are good on air. Some boats allow slightly longer bottom times for 2-dive schedules, so you are still getting decent time underwater. Down Under Dive and Passions of Paradise are great picks here. They do not offer a 3rd dive, so the day is planned around 2 solid dives, not squeezing them in. This is also a great option if you are warming up for a liveaboard after time out of the water.

Our Recommendation - Aqua Quest - Divers Den - For 2 dives AquaQuest offers the best value. The total cost is AUD $360. This trip includes a large, modern dive platform, dive guides, all necessary gear and visits 2 outer reef sites. It is a strong option for certified divers who want to maximise dive time without stretching the budget.

Only 5 boats in Cairns and Port Douglas offer 3 certified dives on a day tour. The table below shows the full cost including all dive upgrades, and is sorted by total price. Three dives are for those who want as much time underwater as possible. The boats offering this are the most dive-focused vessels operating locally. If diving is your main reason for heading to the reef, then these are the trips to look at. *It is also worth noting that AquaQuest is the only operator that allows unguided buddy diving. That is a key factor if you are into underwater photography or prefer diving at your own pace.

Our Recommendation - Silverswift – Quicksilver - For 3 dives, Silverswift offers the best overall value. The total cost is AUD $420, made up of the base fare and 3 progressively cheaper dive upgrades. This works out to about AUD $154 per dive. The trip includes dive guides, full rental gear, a hot and cold buffet lunch and stops at 3 excellent outer reef locations, usually around Milln, Flynn or Thetford reefs. *Please note: Silverswift does not allow unguided buddy diving. All dives are guided.
We’ve personally experienced nearly every tour we offer and have extensive knowledge of the Cairns region, with a special focus on snorkeling and diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Best of all, our advice is completely free! Why not take advantage of our expert travel and package recommendations?
We’re local divers who’ve personally reviewed every day trip listed in this guide. Our recommendations are based on actual experience, not paid promotions. We talk to travellers every day and know how to match people with the right boat, whether you’re after the cheapest certified dive trip or the best value for 3 dives. Booking through us doesn’t cost more than going direct and you get honest advice based on real diving, not just brochures.
All prices in our tables include standard rental dive gear (tanks, weights, mask, fins). However, mandatory fees vary. Most major boats (Quicksilver, Reef Experience) include the levy in their base fare. Operators like Ocean Free, Ocean Freedom and Reef Daytripper often charge a separate mandatory Reef Levy (typically $15–$30 AUD). Always confirm the final price.
The short answer is no, not usually. While some boats offer a small discount (typically $10-$20 AUD) if you use your own BCD, regulator and wetsuit, the saving is minor compared to the hassle and cost of transporting bulky dive gear to Cairns. If you are only doing a day trip, we recommend renting. If you are doing a liveaboard tour or cannot dive without your personal gear, then it may be worthwhile. If you’d like to compare, let us know and we can send you the prices excluding gear rental.
Yes, trips to Green Island or Fitzroy Island are often cheaper on paper, BUT we generally don’t recommend them for diving. The reef surrounding the islands is not as abundant or diverse as the corals and marine life found on the outer Great Barrier Reef, plus you are near an island so visibility tends to be lower too. If diving and seeing the Great Barrier Reef is your priority and budget permits, we strongly recommend spending the extra money and going to the outer reef. It’s worth it!
No boat can guarantee more marine life than another. You’re visiting a wild environment and conditions change daily. Some boats promote access to ‘the best’ reef sites, but the reality is that weather, visibility and marine life movement are unpredictable. All outer reef operators access quality sites, what you see on the day often comes down to luck.
We are your people! Julie Johnston suffers from motion sickness. My best advice you probably already know, plan ahead and take preventative medication. That way, you can avoid seasickness and have an awesome day at the reef. This answer is not being blasé either. I do get seasick. I take Kwells before every single reef trip and have the best time. If for some reason you can’t take medication, as we know it makes some people drowsy, then we have prepared notes on Cairns’ Best Reef Trips To Avoid Seasickness.
Interestingly, most Cairns day boats do not allow unguided buddy diving. For safety, logistics and reef protection, they prefer all certified divers to be guided. AquaQuest is one of the few Cairns boats that allows certified buddy pairs to dive independently, which is great for photographers or those who prefer to set their own pace.
It depends on your priorities. Large catamarans are faster and more stable in rough water. Smaller sailing boats or older motor vessels might have fewer people onboard (but remember boat size to person ratio doesn’t mean they are less ‘crowded’), but may be slower or more basic. If you get seasick easily, look for high-speed cats with good stabilisers.
All dive boats also welcome snorkellers, and some even offer glass-bottom boat tours or visits to sand cays. If you are splitting activities in your group, check what’s included for snorkellers as well.
In breaking down the costs, one principle remains clear: the cheapest option isn’t always the best value. While it’s possible to log a single certified dive for as low as $260, maximising your experience means looking at the cost per dive. For serious certified divers, committing to 2 or 3 dives offers a dramatically better return on investment. The difference in price between a 1 dive day and a premium 3 dive day is often marginal when compared to the quality of the reef sites you’ll see and the time you get to spend underwater.
The Great Barrier Reef is a once-in-a-lifetime destination, it’s not the part of your trip to cut corners on. You can save money on accommodation or meals, but you cannot improve a sub-par dive day.
