Our family loves adventure! If you are following our blogs, you’d know that weekends and holidays are spent out of the house, off the screen and getting into nature to make some amazing memories in this beautiful part of the world we call home. When we aren’t under the water, in the rainforest or high in the hills that surround Cairns, we’re roaming far and wide to explore new places, some of which are remote and not all of which have accommodation. While we love adventure, we also love beds, having our own bathroom and some climate control. So to make our remote travels just that little bit more comfortable, we bought a hybrid caravan and it’s been a game changer, because now we can do it all. We named our little home on wheels Tropical Trailblazers. It sleeps 4 and it’s available to rent, so you can hire it to go and make your own memories in comfort and style too. Check out our availability with easy rental terms.
There’s lots to love about this Cairns caravan. Richard loves the king bed, he is 6ft 4inches tall and appreciates the space. Julie loves the bathroom and the clever layout, which makes the best use of indoor space. Ethan loves the bunks, so he can bring a mate, and the charging stations for those all important devices at the end of the day. We all love how quick and easy it is to set it up and the fact we can take our dog with us, is the best.
Our Cairns family caravan for hire ticks a lot of boxes. It has a luxury king sized bed, we’re talking actual mattress, which is amazing, and a bunk for the kids. Indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, tick. Internal and external kitchens with multi-burner stovetops, sinks and pantry storage, tick. Slide out fridge freezer, tick. Double-glazed windows with insect screens and privacy screens, plus a lockable security screen door, tick. Fans at all beds and air conditioning! Life just got better because climate control means we can explore, all year round. An amazing internal floor plan which makes clever use of all the space and best of all, this is so easy to set up. Pop the roof, slide out the bedroom and you’re done – 10 minutes – so good!
Towing a caravan requires experience and the right tow vehicle. You might not be aware that there are weight considerations regarding legal towing. Our caravan weighs around 2,500kg, so your vehicle must have a minimum braked towing capacity of 2,800kg. If it does not, then you will not be able to safely or legally tow the caravan. It is also preferable that your vehicle has an electric brake controller such as a REDARC Tow-Pro Elite, but if you don’t, we can hire you a portable brake controller that works via a phone app. This will allow you to tow the van without a fitted brake controller. Also, for your safety and the safety of the caravan, we do require you to have some prior towing experience, be it other caravans, boats, horse trailers and more. If do you not have any towing experience, we can deliver the caravan to your destination.
We’re happy to deliver the van to your destination. Many of our customers enjoy staying at places like BIG4 Ingenia Holidays Cairns Coconut Resort and Ellis Beach. Some visitors come from Townsville and other locations to holiday with friends who already own caravans. Renting and having the van delivered is also popular because you can bring pets (please remember not to leave them alone in the van). Delivery also removes the hassle of setting up, as we handle it for you and aim to arrive before you, so everything is ready to go. If you’re staying at a local caravan park, we recommend booking a powered site so you can use the air conditioner without worrying about battery management.
The bunk beds in our caravan are suitable for young/er children. The bottom bunk is a king-single and top bunk is a single, so size-wise they are probably not going to be great for older teenagers. As an aside, our 12-year-old son sleeps comfortably on either the king single bottom bunk or the single top bunk, as do his friends. Couples can also rent the van and find the bunks useful for storing bags and belongings. Please note: While setting up the caravan is not overly strenuous, you will need some level of strength and fitness to ‘pop the top’. Also, there is a step to enter the caravan, so be aware of that from a mobility perspective.
You can take our caravan pretty much anywhere in Far North Queensland, except Cape York Peninsula. Why? We’ve done the trip to the tip and we know the roads, it is our belief that trips of this nature could cause damage and result in an unreasonable amount of wear and tear on our caravan. That being said, we are happy for you to take the caravan off-road to places such as Cobbold Gorge and Elim Beach. Our van is capable and covered (with insurance) for off-road conditions. Naturally we reserve the right to decline bookings if your journey is considered too harsh for the van. We approach this by considering what we would ourselves deem reasonable.
April to November is the optimal time for caravanning and camping in North Queensland, thanks to the mild temperatures and pleasant weather. We also receive many booking requests around Christmas, as families look forward to spending the holidays in scenic destinations. Our top tip is to ensure you have access to power during the summer months, as air conditioning is essential for staying cool and comfortable. School holidays and events like Savannah in the Round are extremely popular, so it’s crucial to book early. Securing your reservation in advance will help you avoid disappointment and ensure you can reserve a great spot at your chosen destination.
So that’s the details, now for the important stuff. As Tropical Trailblazers you can take this baby to powered and unpowered sites, as it has an off-grid capable battery system with solar power (please note – you do need power if you want to run the air conditioner). Pets are allowed. Fun fact, the real driver for us starting to camp over cabin, was when we welcomed our border collie Stormy to the family. We don’t like leaving him at home, so you can take your fur baby with you too. If you can’t or don’t want to tow – and we can talk specs, when you want to rent – then we can deliver it to any site within a 200km radius of Cairns. As you can imagine terms and conditions apply and there’s a minimum 3 night hire, keep reading for more information.
Our Austrack Hybrid Caravan is the perfect combination of the best features from caravans and camper trailers. Packed with luxurious amenities, this compact caravan is a breeze to manage. Inside, you’ll find a king-size bed and two cozy bunks for the kids, fans, air conditioning (powered site required), living area, internal kitchen, toilet and shower. All windows have screens and privacy blinds, as does the front door. The exterior has an automatic awning, slide out kitchen and 120l fridge / freezer, with plenty of pantry space. This one is suitable for powered and unpowered sites, with an off-grid capable battery system with solar power. Setting up camp is quick and easy, taking only around 10 minutes with the pop-top roof and slide-out feature that provides ample space, just like a larger caravan but with twice the fun!
We want to make your life easy so this baby is ready to roll with pretty much everything you need already sorted. There’s pillows, sheets, blankets and bath towels. We’ve stacked and packed breakfast bowls, plates and cups, cutlery, salad bowl, cutting board, cheese board and wine glasses (bonus – the wine glasses are durable, so you don’t have to worry about breakages). The essentials are in there, we’re talking instant coffee, hot chocolate, salt, pepper, oil, paper towels, tissues and sandwich bags. You can cook on the gas burner stove top, light a fire and enjoy cooking on coals, doesn’t get much better than that in the great outdoors. Speaking of the great outdoors, our Tropical Trailblazers Cairns family caravan for hire has an electric awning for shade, outdoor mat, camping chairs and table.
Low Season Rates | $160 per day |
Hight Season (School Holidays, Public Holidays) | $180 per day |

If your towing vehicle does not have an Electronic Brake Controller installed, we can rent you a portable unit. Towing mirrors are mandatory and are provided. The caravan is equipped with a D035 towing coupling – we will provide the tongue to be fitted to your vehicle. You must have some towing experience in order to tow this van, we will not hire the van to people with no towing experience – unless you opt for the delivery and pick-up service option.

Tropical Trailblazers are go and this one is ready to roll, giving you and your family the perfect place to kick back and enjoy the great outdoors without compromising on comfort. We’ve already been on a few adventures, caving at Chillagoe and clambering up the coloured sands at Elim Beach, both of which we highly recommend. There’s lots of places you might like to go, like a long weekend at Lake Tinaroo, head to the hills at Herberton and Ravenshoe, hang out at Granite Gorge or soak in the thermal pools at Talaroo or Innot Hot Springs. Undara Experience is a great road trip and one of our absolute favourites is Cobbold Gorge. There are lots of locations you can take our caravan and to get you inspired, we’re listing places it’s already been – either with us, or with others who have hired it. If this sounds good to you, then check the listing on Camplify or drop us a line at richard@ilovecairns.com.au
Far North Queensland has lots of caravan parks. Perhaps the most well-known ones are the BIG4 Ingenia Holidays Cairns Coconut Resort (at Woree) and the BIG4 Port Douglas Glengarry Holiday Park. Both of these caravan parks have lots of kids activities and features, including extensive water parks and pools, jumping pillows and more. There are also beachside caravan parks, and our favourites are at Palm Cove and Ellis Beach. Book ahead to get an absolute beachfront site at Ellis Beach (pictured here), so you can wake up to the sound of the waves. If leafy surrounds are more your style, then there’s Cool Waters Caravan Park and Cairns Crystal Cascades Holiday Park.
Lake Tinaroo is beloved by locals as the place to get away from the coast and enjoy the freshwater activities of the lake. This includes fishing, sailing, water skiing, SUP and kayaking. There are numerous camping grounds and sites, strategically located at various places around the lake. Some are campsites are in Danbulla National Park and State Forest and are operated by the Queensland Government Parks and Forests. These include, but are not limited to, Downfall Creek (pictured here – read our Camping at Downfall Creek review) and Kauri Creek camping area, Fong-On Bay and more. There are also several commercially operated caravan parks, with various features. On the northern end of the Tablelands you have the Granite Gorge Caravan Park, which is another locals favourite spot and Davies Creek National Park.
Etty Bay is the place to be if you want to see a Cassowary in the wild, and you can double down on your chances by spending the night at Etty Bay Cabins and Caravan Park. Strategically located with beachfront access, this is a lovely little place for a relaxing getaway. Please note, pets are not welcome here due to the presence of wildlife. If you want to take your pooch along with you, then you will have to head a little further south to the Mission Beach area, where there are beachfront locations and rainforest destinations. It’s a chilled vibe, perfect for camping and caravanning.
Innot Hot Springs is the closest thermal springs to Cairns. It’s just over a 2 hour drive and is located between Ravenshoe and Mount Garnet. You can check in with our caravan to the Innot Hot Springs Caravan and Leisure Park, which has spacious and shady sites. As guests at the park, you have unlimited access to their range of spring-fed pools and the nearby Nettle Creek. Innot Hot Springs Caravan and Leisure Park is pet friendly, but your pet is not allowed at any of the communal spaces, including the 6 thermal pools and camp kitchen. We recently stayed here – read all about it with our Camping at Innot Hot Springs review.
Talaroo Hot Springs is further from Cairns than Innot Hot Springs – it’s over a 4 hour drive – and offers a completely different experience to Innot. The thermal pool at Talaroo Hot Springs is only accessible on a paid tour, there is one main thermal swimming pool and/or you can opt in for a private soak pool of the restorative thermal waters. Talaroo is presented by the Ewamian people who are the Traditional Owners. The tours combine cultural information and history, as well as details surrounding the mineral composition of the waters. Camping at Talaroo Hot Springs is pet friendly, so you can take your pooch, but they are not welcome on tours or at any of the communal facilities. We’ve stayed here twice – read all about it with our Camping at Talaroo Hot Springs review.
We love Chillagoe. It’s a great place to go camping with our caravan, and we have been many times – read all about it with our Things to do at Chillagoe review. Ranger guided tours in the stunning limestone caves are a must, as is taking a walk to the balancing rocks and exploring the ancient escarpments. There are a few different places you can camp in Chillagoe, our favourite is the Chillagoe Observatory and Eco Lodge. This place is back from the main road, so it is nice and quiet, plus you can book their night sky observatory tour, which was excellent. Chillagoe is around a 2.5 hour drive from Cairns on mostly sealed roads.
We also love Cobbold Gorge. In actual fact, it’s one of our favourite outback places to go and if you haven’t been, then we highly recommend it. You can book a caravan site at Cobbold Village, which has lots of amenities and free activities, including an infinity swimming pool with pool bar, licensed bar and bistro, lake with free kayaks and walks. It is pet friendly. A tour to Cobbold Gorge is a must. There’s a range of tour options, the main one is the Gorge Tour which includes silent boat ride, guided walk and the glass bridge. You can also book a SUP tour or scenic heli flight. Read all about it with our Camping at Cobbold Gorge review.
We took our caravan on the Dinosaur Trail and had an excellent time. The trail includes the western Queensland towns of Winton, Hughenden and Richmond, and the best way to ensure you don’t miss a minute of the dinosaur action is to book an Australian Dinosaur Trail multi-day pass. This gets you entry to 4 attractions which are the Flinders Discovery Centre at Hughenden, the Australian Age of Dinosaurs at Winton and the nearby Lark Quarry and Kronosaurus Korner in Richmond. There’s a fair bit of driving involved, so you should allow around a week for this one. Lots of caravan parks to choose from, but book ahead and early as it does get busy in the school holidays. Read all about it with our Australian Age of Dinosaurs from Cairns review.
Elim Beach and the Coloured Sands Gorge are gorgeous! No pun intended. We only discovered this awesome place in 2023 and liked it so much, we went twice and took the caravan and the dog. For us, this place is like a mini-Fraser Island destination. You can go beach driving at low tide, explore sand dunes and run down sand blows. If you are a keen 4WD adventurer, take the in-land road over to Cape Bedford. If you want to take our caravan here you need to book a site at Elim Beach Camp, also known as Eddie’s Camp, which is pet friendly, but only has unpowered sites. The amenities here are relatively basic, but it puts you where you need to be. We haven’t written our review on this one yet, but will add it to the site soon.
These are just some of the places you can take our caravan. We’re all about the fun stuff! Celebrating the starry night sky, campfires and marshmallows and kicking back by the lake, next to a stream or at the beach , before tumbling into a comfortable bed with the mod cons. That’s what we love and if it sounds good to you too – then the Tropical Trailblazer home away from home is waiting for your next adventure.
Loaded question. We had already towed a camper trailer before we bought this, so had towing experience. We think this is the same as towing the camper trailer, but with a little more weight. So how easy is it tow? ~ It’s pretty easy if you have towing experience. In fact, you need to have towing experience to hire this caravan – that’s for your safety and the safety of the caravan.
Yes. You will need to have a 4×4 or commercial truck. We have a Nissan Navara and can tow it no problem at all. If your towing vehicle does not have an Electronic Brake Controller installed, we can rent you a portable unit. Towing mirrors are mandatory and are provided. The caravan is equipped with a D035 towing coupling – we will provide the tongue to be fitted to your vehicle.
The tare weight is 2,340kg and gross trailer mass is 2,800kg. It’s 15 feet long.
The caravan is equipped with a D035 towing coupling – we will provide the tongue to be fitted to your vehicle.

Yes it does. The television is wall mounted next to the king-sized bed.
Yes there are. So you can charge mobiles, tablets and camera batteries. Happy days.
Unpowered sites are OK as it has an off-grid capable battery system with solar power. Obviously the battery power / duration would be limited pending where you parked. Please note you need a powered site to run the air conditioner.
