Great Barrier Reef Liveaboard Diving

Here’s our 2026 guide to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tours. Why have we put this together? Honestly, it’s because we know picking the right location and destination is a difficult decision, especially when you’ve never been here. So many options. We also know picking the wrong one is a very expensive mistake to make, and you might end up feeling underwhelmed, or even worse, disappointed. We don’t want that to happen. This is a bucket list experience.

Firstly, some Great Barrier Reef (GBR) fun facts. Size is everything. The Great Barrier Reef covers over 344,400 square kilometres, and has more than 3,000 reefs, 600 islands and 300 coral cays. It’s located in the waters of Queensland’s eastern coastline and stretches over 2,300 kilometres (1,400 miles), from its most northern to most southern point. Over 800 commercial tour operators have permits to take you there and 85% of all GBR tours operate out of 3 hubs.

Great Barrier Reef Liveaboard Diving Locations

  • Cairns. The best place. Northern Great Barrier Reef. Cairns has the most day tours and liveaboard tours.
  • Port Douglas. 1 hour north of Cairns. Has reef day tours but no liveaboard tours.

Great Barrier Reef Liveaboard - Marina

Cairns is the best place for a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour. It offers the most diversity in tours, prices and destinations.

Where do Cairns’ Great Barrier Reef Liveaboard Dive Tours Go?

OK – before we get into the boats, let’s look at the actual reef locations you can visit on a liveaboard dive tour from Cairns – and there’s really 3 destinations.

  1. Cairns Outer Great Barrier Reef. Located 45-60km offshore from Cairns, these reefs are positioned on the edge of the continental shelf, which is why they are called outer reefs. It takes around 60-90 minutes to reach them by boat (each-way). The maximum dive depth is usually 28m. These reefs are suitable for divers of all experience levels, with coral gardens and walls, turtles, reef sharks and an abundance of marine life. Tours can be booked anywhere from 1 night to 7 nights, with several operators providing these trips.
  2. Far Northern Ribbon Reefs The Ribbon Reefs are also on the edge of the continental shelf, but in addition to being offshore, they are several hours north of Cairns by boat. These reefs offer some of the best Great Barrier Reef diving and are home to several world-famous dive sites, including the Cod Hole and Steve’s Bommie. The marine life here is on steroids, big Potato Cod, thousands of coloured anthias, sea snakes, sea turtles and just more, of everything. The maximum dive depth is usually 38m, but these sites are suitable for divers of all experience levels. Due to distance from Cairns, Ribbon Reef tours are a minimum of 3 nights and include a one-way scenic flight, between Cairns and Lizard Island. They are more expensive than outer reef tours, but if you have the budget, these are amazing.
  3. Osprey Reef These trips are only suitable for divers with Advanced Certification and above. Osprey Reef is around 350km north of Cairns. It is remote reef diving with sea mounts rising from the depths, and coral walls dropping over 2,000m below. These trips suit adventure divers looking for sharks, pelagics and big marine life. Dive depth is to your experience level. Travel time to get there is between 18-20 hours (each-way), which is why these tours are a minimum of 4 nights (with a one-way scenic flight from Cairns to Lizard Island) or 7 nights including Osprey and the Ribbon Reefs.

Our Verdict: The Ribbon Reef tours are phenomenal, but expensive. Cairns Outer Reef tours have great diving, are more affordable, with more choice. Osprey Reef is about the drop-offs, sharks and visibility, they’re expensive and suited to Advanced divers only.

Great Barrier Reef Liveaboard - Cod Hole

The Ribbon Reefs have some of our favourite dive sites of all time. The Cod Hole is epic, with its big friendly fish staying in our memories forever.

Great Barrier Reef Liveaboard Diving Tours The Boats & Prices

Let’s talk cost. At a glance these look expensive. Great Barrier Reef liveaboard tours are more expensive than other international destinations, such as Indonesia. This is due to industry compliance, world-class safety standards and wage costs in Australia. It’s also important to remember the liveaboard cost includes accommodation and all your meals. The price of the *Cairns Outer Reef liveaboard trips includes dive equipment rental. The more remote Ribbon Reef and Osprey Reef trips include a scenic flight between Cairns and Lizard Island (dive equipment rental is extra). To compare apples with apples, the below shows the price for all destinations. *There is more than 1 Cairns Outer Reef liveaboard operator – we show them all further down the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour worth it?

Yes, a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour is worth it if you want more time on the reef, more dives, and a deeper reef experience than a standard day trip. Instead of travelling out and back in one day, you stay on the reef overnight and wake up already there.

This usually means early morning dives (one of the best times to dive!), night dives, multiple dive sites and more time in the water. If this is ‘your time’ to see the Great Barrier Reef, maximise your experience on a liveaboard boat.

How many days do you need for a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard?

It depends on your itinerary and budget. If it’s your first liveaboard tour, then we suggest a 3 day / 2 night Cairns outer reef liveaboard tour. These depart daily and are the perfect balance of value, comfort and reef time.

If you wanted to see the far northern Ribbon Reefs or Osprey Reef, then the minimum time aboard is 3 nights and 4 nights. This is due to their distance from Cairns.

Is a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard tour going to provide a better experience than a day trip?

Yes, a liveaboard tour is going to provide a better experience. It gives you more time at sea, visiting multiple reef destinations. Transfers to and from Cairns to the outer reef takes between 60-90 minutes each way, so travel time does represent a significant portion of a day tour.

Do I need to be an experienced diver to join a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour?

No, you do not need to be an experienced diver. The Cairns outer reef liveaboard diving tours cater to divers of all experience levels. In all honesty, the majority of guests on these boats have limited dive experience. For some people, this is the first trip since becoming a certified diver. The crew are all very experienced and supportive.

Note: If you wanted to do a Ribbon Reefs trip then you must have some dive experience, due to their remote location. Osprey Reef trips are only suitable for experienced divers with Advanced Certification as a minimum.

Are the dives guided on Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tours?

No. You might be surprised to learn that the majority of Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tours do not include – or sometimes even provide – guided diving as an option. As certified divers, there’s an expectation that you are able to do unguided diving with a buddy partner.

Some of the Cairns liveaboard boats do provide the option to pay for dive guides, in additional cost to the tour price. All diving is buddy diving, if you are not travelling with one, the crew will pair you with another diver of similar experience and certification levels.

How many dives are included in a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tours?

The number of dives included in a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour depends on your tour duration and destination. For Cairns outer reef liveaboard tours, please see below.

  • OceanQuest. 1 night – 6 dives. 2 nights – 10 dives. 3 nights – 14 dives. 4 nights – 18 dives.
  • ProDive Cairns. 2 nights – 11 dives.
  • For liveaboard trips to remote destinations. Ribbon Reefs – 3 nights – 11 dives. Osprey Reef – 4 nights – 15 dives.

Can I do night dives on a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour?

Yes, you can do night dives on liveaboard diving tours and night diving is one of the special parts of a liveaboard trip. The reef feels completely different after dark, with different marine life, colours and activity.

Some operators will require you to have previous night diving experience and/or pay for a dive guide. If night diving is important to you, check before booking.

What’s included in a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour?

The price of all Cairns outer reef liveaboard diving tours cover: transfers to and from the reef; accommodation and meals; dive briefings and dive equipment rental.

The price of Ribbon Reef and Osprey Reef tours cover: accommodation and meals; dive briefings; one-way scenic flight between Cairns and Lizard Island.

Can my non-diving companion come on a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour?

Yes, non-diving companions are welcome to go on Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tours. The Cairns outer reef sites are all suitable for snorkellers, as well as divers.

What is the best time of year for a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour?

Any time is a good time for a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour! They run throughout the year. Peak season for tourism in Cairns is between May and October. There is less rain and zero chance of a cyclone. Between June and July you may see whales. From November to April there is an increased chance of rain, but warmer water.

There is no wrong time to go on a GBR liveaboard tour. I would say a more important decision to make, is which boat should you go on and we can help.

Will I get seasick on a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour?

If you usually suffer from seasickness or motion sickness, then ‘yes’ chances are you will. If you are worried about this, then plan ahead and take some preventative medication before you go and while you are on the boat. Editor note – I get seasick but always take preventative medication and have never been sick on a liveaboard boat.

Is a Great Barrier Reef liveaboard diving tour better than doing multiple day trips?

For divers, a liveaboard is usually better than doing multiple day trips because you spend more time on the reef and less time travelling back and forth from Cairns each day. Sometimes the liveaboard boats are fully booked. In this instance multiple day trips will still provide the opportunity to explore multiple reef sites and locations.

How do I choose the right Great Barrier Reef liveaboard?

Choosing the right Great Barrier Reef liveaboard depends on your dive experience, travel dates, budget, cabin preference, comfort level and whether everyone in your group wants to dive.
