CairnsUnderwater Camera Hire

You’re heading to the Great Barrier Reef, it’s a bucket list experience. You want to make sure you get the best souvenir of all, photos and videos of colourful corals and clams, turtles gliding by and schools of fish. A precious momento of your time on the reef. So, how can you achieve this if you don’t own an underwater camera, or have a GoPro but no waterproof housing? Fear not, we’ve all the information you need to make it happen.

Author’s note: I’ve been to the reef nearly 100 times, starting with a GoPro Hero 2 years ago and now owning three different GoPros up to the latest Hero 13. I’ve used simple underwater cameras in housings, lugged around a semi-professional rig and hired GoPros from Calypso Reef Imagery. All of the underwater images and videos on this site have been taken by us, so our recommendations and advice come from first-hand experience. Side note, getting a case or housing for your mobile phone is not going to give the results you are looking for, we’ve tried that too. More on this below.

Cairns Underwater Camera Hire - Featured

Photos and videos are the best souvenir of your Great Barrier Reef experience. You can take them yourself with the right gear, and if you don't have the equipment needed this can be rented in Cairns.

Why Rent an Underwater Camera?

If you already own a GoPro or another underwater camera, make sure you have a proper waterproof housing and a floating handle. If not, renting is the smarter option. You’ll need to rent both the camera and housing (housings aren’t rented separately). Renting avoids buying expensive gear, lets you test it before boarding, and ensures you don’t compete for the limited stock available on boats.

Consider hiring a second camera for your snorkel or dive buddy. It doubles your chances of capturing that perfect photo or TikTok clip, it acts as insurance against technical issues and best of all, you can get pics and clips of each other. GoPros are known to occasionally freeze underwater, and the only fix is returning to the boat to swap batteries — having two cameras means you don’t lose the moment.

Most people choose GoPros or similar action cameras. They excel at video: wide-angle lenses capture sweeping reef scenes, and built-in stabilisation keeps footage smooth. Colour fades with depth without dive lights. Boats don’t rent dive lights, but you can hire them from Calypso Reef Imagery. On liveaboard trips, dive lights are a must — they transform dive footage from good to great.

Cairns is also home to one of Australia’s best specialist underwater photography retailers, Digital Diver. Located on Lake Street, they stock an extensive range of underwater photography gear you won’t find anywhere else. It’s also a great place to get expert advice or explore upgrades beyond a basic action camera or point-and-shoot.

Note: Introductory divers or people doing dive courses  are not permitted to take a camera on their dives.

Cairns Underwater Camera Hire - Turtles

Make the magic last forever with stunning photographs and videos. Great for socials even better for printing out and making a canvas to have at home. Turtles are one of our favs.

Independent Underwater Camera Rentals in Cairns

In Cairns, the only dedicated shop offering underwater camera rentals is Calypso Reef Imagery. They rent GoPros, DJI Action cameras, and Olympus TG models, and also sell GoPros, DJI gear and most accessories needed for underwater photography and video. Calypso is conveniently located at the Reef Fleet Terminal, the same place where you check in for your reef trip. Picking up a camera is as simple as stopping by while you’re already there, but make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Rental Shop Day Rate (from) Notes
Calypso Reef Imagery (Calypso Productions) A$49 GoPro Hero 13 (A$49), DJI Action4 (A$69), DJI Action5 Pro (A$79), Olympus TG-7 (A$69). Includes waterproof housing, floating handle, strap and spare battery. Bring your own high-speed micro-SD card.

Tip: Book ahead in peak season to secure your preferred model.

Note: Calypso is currently the only store in Cairns renting DJI Action cameras. Some in the industry believe DJI models produce better colours underwater compared to GoPro, especially without filters or lights.

Cairns Underwater Camera Hire - Port Douglas

There's no light needed for snorkeling photos, but you do need light for dive photos to pick up the colour in the corals and fish. This is demonstrated on this pic, the coral versus the diver behind.

Green Island Underwater Camera Hire

Green Island is accessible on day trips from Cairns, with the option to stay overnight or longer at the Green Island Resort. If you travel with Great Adventures, cameras can be hired onboard. If you go with Ocean Free, you’ll need to bring your own or rent one in advance from Calypso Reef Imagery in Cairns. Side note – There are lots of turtles at Green Island and we snapped the above pic while snorkeling by the Green Island jetty.

Cairns Underwater Camera Hire - Fitzroy Island

At Fitzroy Island you can snorkel from the beach or book a guided snorkel tour which takes you around the headland. Stunning scenery above and below the water. Wouldn't have got this shot without a GoPro.

Fitzroy Island GoPro and Camera Hire

Fitzroy Island is a popular day trip and overnight destination. There’s lots to do at Fitzroy Island and we’ve been many times. Camera hire is available if you visit with Sunlover, but not if you travel independently by ferry or stay on the island.

Operator Day Rate (from) Notes
Sunlover Reef Cruises A$69 GoPro hire package, same as their outer reef pontoon.
Independent Ferry / Day Visitors No hire available on the island itself; rent in Cairns beforehand.
Cairns Underwater Camera Hire - Frankland Islands

This is the Frankland Islands another stunning reef trip option when you are staying in Cairns. Hire your camera onboard or in Cairns before you go.

Frankland Islands Underwater Cameras

Frankland Islands Reef Cruises departs south of Cairns at Deeral. Since you travel by bus from the city, you won’t pass the Reef Fleet Terminal camera shops in the morning. Hire is available onboard, or you’ll need to organise gear the day before.

Operator Day Rate (from) Notes
Frankland Islands Reef Cruises A$60 Hire payable onboard; limited stock. Departs Deeral (with bus transfer from Cairns), so arrange rentals the day before if you want more choice.
Cairns Underwater Camera Hire - Livebaords

If you're lucky to be on a liveaboard then having an underwater camera or GoPro is essential! So many opportunities to get simply awesome pictures and videos.

Cairns Liveaboard Diving Underwater Camera Hire

Liveaboard trips give you multiple days on the reef. Some operators have limited camera hire, but it’s often better value to rent in Cairns before departure, especially if you want more model choice and spare batteries.

Operator Day Rate (from) Notes
Pro Dive Cairns No hire onboard; bring your own or rent in Cairns.
Divers Den (OceanQuest) A$75 GoPro 12 and Olympus TG-7 available; payable onboard; limited availability.
Reef Encounter A$89 GoPro hire onboard; introductory divers cannot carry cameras on first dive.
Cairns Underwater Camera Hire - Sweetlips

These beauties are diagonal-banded sweetlips one of my favourite fish to photograph. The contrast in light and colour is just beautiful.

What About Using Your Phone?

It’s tempting to take your phone underwater, but even with water-resistant models the risks usually outweigh the rewards. Before you rely on it for reef photography, keep these points in mind:

  • Water-resistant ≠ dive-ready: saltwater and prolonged immersion can corrode components.
  • Housings: cheap pouches can leak or fog; condensation ruins shots.
  • Image quality: phones struggle with underwater white balance and autofocus; touch screens misbehave when wet. At the end of the day, it’s really disappointing thinking you are getting great shots, when you aren’t. It’s also very frustrating, when the screen stops responding to your pushing and takes no photos at all.
  • Risk: one leak can destroy an expensive device. A hired action camera is safer and usually performs better.

For casual, shallow snorkelling selfies, a purpose-built housing for your specific phone can work if thoroughly tested. For anything more, hire a dedicated underwater camera.

Cairns Underwater Camera Hire - Pro Photos

Our family all love taking photos so sometimes it's a struggle to see who gets the camera and GoPro, but these moments are ones to cherish forever.

Boats With Professional Underwater Photographers

If you’d prefer to enjoy the reef without juggling gear, many larger reef boats have professional photographers onboard. They capture snorkellers and divers throughout the day, with packages available for purchase afterwards. Expect to pay A$25–50 per photo or A$99–150 for a USB package.

Handy Hint: If you want your colours to really 'pop' then consider getting a bright rashie or fins. It can add extra dimension to your photos and videos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hire a GoPro in Cairns?

Yes. Most reef boats in Cairns offer GoPro hire, with prices from about A$60–A$108 depending on the model and package. Independent shops in Cairns also rent the latest GoPros and compacts for multi-day use.

Is underwater camera rental available in Port Douglas?

Yes. Operators like Quicksilver, Silversonic, Poseidon and Wavedancer all offer GoPro rentals onboard. Packages usually include a 64 GB SD card and optional insurance.

Is there Green Island camera hire?

Yes, but only if you travel with Great Adventures, who rent GoPros onboard. If you go with Ocean Free or the ferry only, no hire is available on the island, so bring your own or rent in Cairns.

Can I rent a camera on Fitzroy Island?

Yes, if you travel with Sunlover Reef Cruises. Their Fitzroy trip offers the same hire package as their outer reef tours. Independent ferry passengers won’t find hire on the island itself.

Does Frankland Islands Reef Cruises offer GoPro hire?

Yes. GoPro hire is available onboard for around A$60. Since the trip departs Deeral, you may want to organise gear in Cairns the day before if you want more options.

Do liveaboard boats in Cairns have camera rental?

Some do. Reef Encounter and Divers Den OceanQuest rent cameras onboard, while Pro Dive Cairns does not. Many divers prefer renting in Cairns beforehand for better choice.

Can I take a camera on an introductory dive?

No. First-time divers aren’t allowed to carry a camera on their intro dive for safety reasons. You can use one while snorkelling or on subsequent dives once certified.

Do I need insurance for my rental camera?

Optional but recommended. Most operators offer a small add-on (about A$10) that reduces your liability if the camera is lost or damaged.

Cairns Underwater Camera Hire Final Thoughts

Choose the option that fits your plans: onboard rental for convenience, or an independent shop for choice and flexibility. For island day trips and liveaboards, check your operator carefully—some offer cameras, others don’t. Or skip the gear entirely and let the onboard photographers do the work.

Book early in peak season, consider the small insurance add-on, and enjoy capturing (or simply being part of) the Reef’s underwater world.
