The business was recently acquired by the owners of Cape Tribulation Camping, who bring their passion to every aspect of operations. From horse care and handling, to supporting riders of all experience levels during the tour and of course, connecting people with their surroundings and horse in a meaningful way. This is delivered with excellence, thanks to their amazing team and guides, who share stories throughout the 90 minute rides. There’s no prior experience necessary to participate in a Cape Trib Horse Rides tour. The minimum age to ride is 10 years old. The horses are already saddled and ready to go on arrival. Prior to mounting, you are provided with a safety briefing covering horse riding and the tour. Once everyone is ready to ride, it’s a gentle walk – single file – through the open paddock, down past Myall Creek, on to Myall Beach and back again.
“I have always loved horses and grew up riding on my family’s sugar cane farm, but it’s been a long time since I was in the saddle and my son has never ridden, Cape Trib Horse Rides changed all of that! This was an excellent introduction to horse riding for him, with the whole tour conducted at walking pace. It was also a thoroughly enjoyable way for me to reconnect with horses and experience this beautiful place in an entirely new way. The briefings were excellent, our guides were awesome and the horses had a lovely, gentle temperament. Everyone was smiling at the end of this, I highly recommend Cape Trib Horse Rides. This review is based on our visit in September 2025.” – Julie Johnston
The ‘check-in’ for Cape Trib Horse Rides is located at the reception of Cape Tribulation Camping, on 3812 Cape Tribulation Road. They ask that you arrive 30-minutes prior to your ride time, so you can complete safety and waiver paperwork and receive a helmet. Once everyone is checked in, it’s a short coach transfer over to the paddock where the horses are waiting. Prior to mounting your horse, the guides provide a safety and tour briefing, covering basic horsemanship and outlining the tour itinerary. The horses are already saddled, and steps are provided for easy mounting. The tour commences with a leisurely walk through the open paddock, set against a backdrop of towering rainforest mountains. We then cross the road, wandering through Cape Tribulation Camping and alongside Myall Creek. The light is dappled here and the guides point of plants of interest, discussing bush tucker and traditional plant use. Then it’s into the light and on to the beautiful beach for photos and splashes in the shallows. It’s a ‘pinch me’ moment to be able to ride horses on the beach and the guides help get some amazing photos for the memories. Then we re-trace our steps, returning to the paddock and stables.
Cape Trib Horse Rides has over 24 horses, all of which are retired racehorses who have been rehabilitated for gentle rides at walking pace. When they aren’t being ridden, these horses roam freely in a large open paddock featuring established trees and seasonal creeks and streams. It’s a good life, and all the horses were in excellent condition. For the tour, each rider was matched to a horse, based on their experience levels, height and weight. The minimum age to participate is 10 years old and the maximum weight is 95kg. Our guides Gerry and Jackie were sensational, friendly and knowledgeable. Gerry had a story-book style of narrative which was engaging and informative, in fact he was one of the best rainforest guides I have toured with for delivery and content. If you love horses and want to experience Cape Tribulation in an entirely new way, then hands down this is the best way to do it!

The Cape Trib Horse Rides was very exciting. It was my first time riding a horse and the tour made it really easy for me to learn how to ride, because the guides taught me everything I needed to know, and we all went at a slow rate, so I left safe. My horse was called Basil and I loved him because he was a very obedient horse. The highlight for me was riding on the beach and in the water, because Basil really liked the water and it was fun. I think other kids would love this, some of my friends have already done it and I give this tour 10/10.
