Fairy Falls - Boulders - Plunge Pool

Escape to Cairns’ hidden paradise at Fairy Falls, a secret retreat with a stunning waterfall plunge pool.

Walk the Trail to Fairy Falls

The walk to Fairy Falls begins at the Crystal Cascades car park, roughly 20 minutes from Cairns city center. Look for the stinging tree warning sign on the eastern side of the car park—this marks the start of the trail. The 300-meter journey is split into two parts: the first half is a flat and easy stroll along tree roots, while the second half requires some rock scrambling.

The trail follows Dowah Creek, winding through a shaded rainforest canopy that keeps the air cool. As you make your way along, the sound of running water grows louder, guiding you to the falls. Sturdy, non-slip shoes are a must for navigating the boulders toward the end of the path. If it’s rained recently, take extra care as the rocks can become slippery.

Once you reach the end, you’ll find a beautiful 40-50-foot waterfall tumbling into a deep plunge pool. The water is cold and clear, offering the perfect antidote to Cairns’ tropical heat. Limited space near the pool means it’s best to pack light—consider bringing a waterproof bag to keep your phone, keys, and shoes safe and dry.

Swim and Relax at Fairy Falls

Fairy Falls is the perfect place to cool off and relax in a natural rainforest setting. The plunge pool at the base of the waterfall is crystal clear, with depths ranging from 4 to 10 feet. Whether you’re taking a dip, standing under the waterfall, or simply sitting on the rocks enjoying the sound of cascading water, the experience is a rejuvenating escape from the tropical heat.

Unlike the nearby Crystal Cascades, Fairy Falls offers a more secluded experience, often visited by those who know where to find Cairns’ hidden gems. The area around the pool is shaded by the surrounding rainforest, keeping it cool and comfortable even on hot days. While the journey is relatively short, it’s not without challenges—rock scrambling toward the end requires balance and care.

Dry weather is the best time to visit Fairy Falls. Rain can make the trail slippery and the rocks dangerous to navigate. Arriving early in the morning or visiting on weekdays can enhance your experience, as these times are quieter and less crowded. Keep in mind that Fairy Falls has no facilities, so you’ll need to bring your own water, snacks, and other essentials.

I have lived in Cairns for over 30 years and this is the first time I have visited Fairy Falls, to be honest I have seen it on Instagram many times and thought it would be crowded with people trying to get that shot but on our visit we had it mostly to ourselves, this place is definitely going on the my favorite list, as the swimming hole is quite deep enough you can get the full cooling experience, all this withing a short distance from Cairns – Richard Johnston
