We booked a diving trip to the GBR through I Love Cairns. Richard and his team could not have been more professional, personable and helpful. They are very knowledgeable on all things to see and do in Cairns and beyond. The I Love Cairns website has detailed pages on things to do, choices of operators and the attractions in the surrounding areas.

And, they gave us a GoPro camera to use on our trip too.

We thoroughly recommend the I Love Cairns team and thank them for the excellent service they provided.
Response from the owner:Thanks for the review, I am glad you enjoyed the diving. We are always happy to share our experiences in North Queensland,
Excellent service! Friendly and brilliant bonus of underwater GoPro included with some bookings. Richard will go out of his way to ensure you have a great booking experience at the right price. Highly recommend.
I booked a diving course and a couple of dives with I Love Cairns. The bookings were all last minute with very limited availability but Richard came through and was always able to find a good optioion. Everything was clearly communicated and I got quick responses on WhatsApp even at night and on the weekend. The bookings also came with a. Free GoPro rental.
Appreciated the local advice. We talked to Richard before booking a reef tour, which was reassuring with all the options available and trying to pick the best day. Tickets came through by email and all went smoothly on the day. Got some great video snorkeling with the GoPro that was conveniently delivered and demonstrated to us.
Response from the owner:Hey Julian, thanks for the review and I am happy you got some great videos with the GoPro and it was nice to meet you and your family.
We contacted Richard to help us choose the best reef tour for our family of six. The website was very helpful but it was great to be able to speak to a person. As well, he provided us a GoPro to use on the reef. He dropped it to us at our hotel and went through how to use it as well as giving us tips on underwater photography. He picked it up from us after the reef tour which was great as we were all pretty tired and we only had to go down to the foyer to return it to him.

Richard also advised Kwells for sea sick prevention. Very glad we took these as a number of people were quite sick!

As we are in Cairns for a week it was helpful to have Richard’s expertise on the tour options. He knows all the operators and has lots of inside knowledge he was able to pass on. Thanks for a great Cairns experience!
Response from the owner:Hey Carolyn, thank you for the review, I am glad you had a great time out on Tusa.
Booking our diving trip through I Love Cairns was super smooth and uncomplicated. We had an amazing experience with Divers Den on the OceanQuest and especially loved the free GoPro hire from I Love Cairns, which let us take home photos and videos of the Great Barrier Reef without having to pay extra. We would definitely book again and highly recommend them! :)
Response from the owner:Hey Nina, it was great meeting you and Niklas, there is nothing more I love than helping people book these trips and seeing how happy they are when we pick up the cameras at the end of the trips. Thanks for the review and safe travels.
Richard has been absolutely wonderful in providing advice and guidance on what to do based on the experience I wanted. Thank you Richard for a very informative website and excellent advice!
Response from the owner:Hi Monica, I’m so happy you got to see the turtle and tick that one off the list. I’m also really glad I was able to help you with the booking. I know this trip meant so much to you and the boys, so it’s wonderful to hear it all came together.
I cannot recommend Richard highly enough. He has been absolutely fabulous. So helpful with booking our great barrier reef tour, dropping off our free hired go pro and recommending a great local takeaway to boot. Seriously, if you're looking for things to do around Cairns get in touch with him!!! Top marks from us!!
Response from the owner:Hey Charlene, thanks for the review we always love helping people out and the Chinese takeaway is the best :).
Super great to work with very Personal in their communications and really helped when we ran into an issue! Would highly suggest using this company!!
Response from the owner:No problem Kim, all we want is happy customers at the end of the day, maybe we will see you in Cairns again.
I had a great time on the ProDive trip. Richard was great with booking the trip and was very responsive to any questions I had. The free GoPro hire was fantastic! I will definitely be booking my cairns trips through I Love Cairns again.
Response from the owner:Hey Amber, thanks for the review, we will have to give two dive lights next time for the ultimate GoPro rig.

Things to do Divers Den - PADI Open Water Course - Liveaboard - 4 Days / 1 Night

Classroom and Theory

Classroom and Theory

Whilst scuba diving is a fun recreational activity, it has technical aspects which must be understood to ensure diver safety. This includes but is not limited to, understanding water pressure and its effects on the body, the importance of equalising underwater and knowing how to manage your dive and check your air levels. The classroom component of the course is completed at their diver training facility in Cairns.

*Please note all students wishing to participate in a PADI Open Water Diver course must complete a self-assessed medical declaration before you start training. Some health conditions, including asthma, epilepsy, heart conditions, chronic sinus concerns and more, may prevent you from participating. You can download the Diver Medical Self Assessment questionnaire here. Please ensure you complete this honestly and accurately, this is vital for your safety when underwater. If further assessment is required, you’ll need to get a doctor’s letter / medical clearance before you start the course, this clearance must be dated no older than 90 days before time of issue and time of course commencement.

Pool Practice Sessions

Pool Practice Sessions

Before you head out to the open waters of the Great Barrier Reef, you will spend some time practicing core scuba diving skills in a swimming pool. This includes water entry, safe descent and ascent, checking your air consumption, buoyancy control and learning to use your scuba equipment. This is all done in the Divers Den heated training pool, which has shallow sides and reaches a maximum depth of 3m in the middle. Learning and practising skills in a confined water environment allows you to become familiar with everything before you go to sea, where waves and current may be present. Instructors guide you through each exercise at a steady pace, so you feel prepared before moving on to your open water dives. Please note it is a PADI requirement that Open Water Divers can swim 200m without stopping and tread water for 10 minutes, without touching the sides or bottom. This must be demonstrated in the pool.

Is this course suitable for solo travellers?

Yes. Solo travellers can book this course. You will meet other students during the classroom, pool and reef components. Twin and quad-share accommodation may be available aboard OceanQuest, subject to cabin allocation. This is on a first in, best dressed basis.

Can certified divers join someone completing the course?

A certified diver can book an OceanQuest liveaboard package for the same dates, subject to availability. You will not be able to dive with the training group. However, you can share the overnight Great Barrier Reef experience with your friend and/or family members.

Can a non-diving partner stay aboard OceanQuest with me?

Non-divers and certified divers may also stay aboard OceanQuest, subject to availability and the package they book. This can make the course suitable for couples or families, where only one person is completing dive training. However, your schedules and in-water activities will differ while course training is underway. Snorkelling from OceanQuest is excellent, for non-diving companions / family members.

What happens if OceanQuest is full on my preferred dates?

Divers Den also runs Open Water Diver courses where the 4 training dives are completed across 2 consecutive Great Barrier Reef day trips (instead of the overnight liveaboard). You will still complete the required course dives, but you will return to Cairns between the two reef days rather than staying overnight.

How far in advance should I book the Divers Den liveaboard course?

We strongly recommend booking your Divers Den liveaboard PADI Open Water Diver course as soon as you know your dates. OceanQuest does sell out, particularly during school holidays, so if you have cabin preferences or set dates, book as soon as you can.

What happens if I struggle with skills during the course?

Your Dive Instructor will provide additional guidance, time and support where needed. Divers Den is committed to supporting their dive students and have successfully certified over 150,000 divers. You are in safe, professional hands.

I get seasick, how can I manage this during the course?

All seasickness medication is a prevention not a cure. If you’re worried about getting seasick, then it’s best to take the medication before getting on the boat. There’s lots of options and considerations to ensure you can still have the best time. We know, because we get seasick; which is why we’ve written a post on our top tips to prevent seasickness.
